The National Misinformation Service

Living in an age of information overload, it has become increasingly harder to separate truth from fiction, which in turn has sown chaos around the world. Over two days, 200 people came to The National Misinformation Service to get a dose of misinformation. The National Misinformation Service is a pop-up experience based in Shoreditch, London which reveals how misinformation acts like a virus. Using this metaphor, visitors are invited to get inoculation against misinformation. Each inoculation dose is a tweet sourced from Twitter. Visitors gain cognitive antibodies against misinformation by reading the tweet and the explanation behind it. Through this process, they learn how to detect common psychological manipulation techniques used to spread misinformation online. By participating in this experience visitors were able to recognize how misinformation spreads, think critically about what they see online, and not spread misinformation.
